Chapter 15

Natasha

It took almost a week for her plan to come to fruition. She had roped in several other slaves, including Dorag and Shaun. Her task was simple—to tunnel a way into the Everlasting Cliffs, so she could slip away during one of their daily mining sessions.

In reality, it was much harder than it sounded. They had to wait until their cave was cleared of resources, before they were moved deeper into the mountain. Dorag was often consulted by the goblins for the best veins, and he had served them well for the time they had been there.

‘Down here, just down here,’ Dorag said patiently, escorting a set of goblins deeper into the mine. ‘I saw some iron down here, lots of iron.’

Whether he was correct, she had no idea. But the line of slaves moved further into the mountain and eventually came to a hollowed out cave that had many nooks and crannies in its darkness.

‘Here it is,’ Dorag said, smiling as he stroked his hand over the feint signs of iron within the wall. ‘It doesn’t look like much, but these are starts of veins. If we dig deep, we will find much iron.’

‘Go, go!’ A goblin commanded.

That was when their tunnelling commenced. While Dorag focused on making a tunnel in a dark corner, the rest of the slaves put every effort into making the mine as productive as possible, to ensure the attention from the goblins remained light.

Judith visited on a daily basis, bringing more and more supplies. She didn’t say whether she was helping or not, but when dried meats accompanied the larger cups of water, it became clear she was trying to help in whatever way she could.

‘It will be tomorrow, lassie,’ Dorag said quietly, talking to her through the cage next to hers. ‘When that wall crumbles, it will be loud. We need a distraction and you need to follow the light, and any air you feel. Never steer away from the air, or you’ll be lost. And water, follow water and you might find a river leading out of the mountains.’
